Fulton Sheen’s 3rd Order Profession at Whitefriars Hall

When we hear that Fulton Sheen made his profession as a Third Order Carmelite at Whitefriars Hall in Washington, D.C., one name in the account may be unfamiliar, Fr. Kilian Lynch, O.Carm., the Prior General of the Carmelite Order at the time who received Sheen’s profession on July 17, 1948.

But who was Lynch?

The short answer is that Lynch was Irish. His Carmelite life, however, would take him from Ireland to Rome, the United States, and eventually England. His story helps us understand how connected the Carmelite family was, even then, across countries and provinces.

Kilian Lynch was born in County Wicklow, Ireland, on February 23, 1902. He entered the Carmelites through the Irish Province and professed his vows in 1922. That same year, he went to the Order’s international college of St. Albert in Rome and was ordained a priest in 1928.

So Lynch did not begin his Carmelite life in the United States, and he was not a member of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province, whose house at Whitefriars Hall is central to the Sheen story. His American connection came later.

The Irish Province had established Carmelite communities in New York, and those communities became the Province of St. Elias in 1931. Lynch served in that province, teaching philosophy at Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York. He went on to become its Provincial before his election as Prior General in 1947.

Fr. Ernest Larkin, O.Carm., wrote that Lynch was in Washington in July 1948 Lynch seeking friars from the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province to join the international Carmelite community at St. Albert’s in Rome and was carrying out business with the province at the time. Sheen made his profession in the chapel at Whitefriars Hall on July 17, 1948, and Lynch received it.

Lynch’s work continued long after that day in Washington. During his time as Prior General, the Carmelites regained their historic home at Aylesford in Kent, England, in 1949. His brothers Elias and Malachy were also Carmelites and helped rebuild the Order’s presence in Britain. Malachy became the first prior of the restored Aylesford community and, in 1969, Kilian became the first Provincial of the restored Anglo-Welsh Province.

There is a great deal of Carmelite history in that one life: an Irish beginning, formation in Rome, service in the United States, leadership of the worldwide Order, and a part in the renewal of Carmel in Britain.

And there, within that larger story, was a particular day at Whitefriars Hall that a well-known American preacher had his profession in the Carmelite Third Order.

The circular letter gives us reason to remember Sheen as a professed Carmelite. Looking more closely at Kilian Lynch helps us see the family Sheen joined: a shared spirituality lived across different places, ministries, and vocations, with prayer at its heart.
