Carmelite JPIC Supports Cape Cod Outreach

Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation Charity and Human Development Grant Supports Vulnerable Residents

Carmelite JPIC Supports Cape Cod Outreach: Thanks to a grant from the Carmelite JPIC Commission,
the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Falmouth supports vulnerable residents through emergency financial aid amidst rising housing and living costs.

Thanks in part to a grant from the Carmelite Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Commission, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conference in Falmouth, Massachusetts continues to respond directly to the growing needs of vulnerable residents on Cape Cod, where the rising cost of housing and seasonal employment instability place many families and individuals at risk of homelessness. Through the support of a $10,000 grant from the JPIC’s Carmelite Charity and Carmelite Human Development Fund, the Conference will continue providing emergency assistance for rent, mortgage payments, sober house fees, utilities, healthcare expenses, and critical transportation costs such as car repairs and insurance.

The need for this assistance has increased dramatically in recent years. Housing support alone has risen significantly, seeing a 50% increase in requests from neighbors struggling to remain safely housed. The grant will help prevent eviction, foreclosure, and homelessness for year-round residents including working families, elderly individuals, disabled persons, and low-income workers whose income often declines during the winter months due to Cape Cod’s seasonal economy.

In addition to direct financial assistance, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul operates a free Food Pantry, a free Clothing Room, and provides monthly food and gasoline vouchers to local residents in need. Volunteers also serve bi-weekly free meals to homeless individuals and others facing hardship. The Conference serves all people without discrimination, including members of the local Wampanoag tribe, migrants, refugees, and undocumented residents.

This work strongly reflects the goals of the Laudato Si’ Action Platform, particularly the call for a “Response to the Cry of the Poor.” Rooted in Catholic social teaching and supported by this Carmelite JPIC grant request submitted by Brother John Sprissler, O.Carm., the project embodies a spirit of compassionate accompaniment, dignity, and community care for those most vulnerable within the Falmouth area.

The Carmelite JPIC Commission is a ministry of the Order of Carmelites dedicated to living out the Gospel through compassionate action and advocacy in the world. Rooted in Carmelite spirituality and inspired by the Church’s social teachings and the vision of Laudato Si’, JPIC promotes human dignity, care for the poor, environmental stewardship, peacebuilding, and the protection of creation. Through education, outreach, collaboration, and financial support of local initiatives, the Carmelite JPIC seeks to strengthen communities and encourage practical responses to social, economic, and environmental challenges while reflecting the Carmelite values of prayer, community, and service.

The Carmelites of the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, in allegiance to Jesus Christ, live in a prophetic and contemplative stance of prayer, common life, and service.  Inspired by Elijah and Mary and informed by the Carmelite Rule, we give witness to an eight-hundred-year-old tradition of spiritual transformation in the United States, Canada, Peru, Mexico, and El Salvador, and Honduras.
