As I searched for the right words to capture the spirit of last night’s gathering, someone suggested I look through Fred Rogers’ quotes. After a little searching, I found one that truly resonated with the occasion: “Often when you think you are at the end of something, you are at the beginning of something else.” This sentiment, I think, perfectly captured the atmosphere at Whitefriars Hall on a night filled with gratitude, joy, and a touch of bittersweet emotion.
On February 12, 2026, the Whitefriars Hall community came together to honor and celebrate the enduring contributions of two individuals who have shaped the Carmelite experience for so many. Through their unique paths and faithful commitment to their personal callings, each has made a lasting impression on our Carmelites lives. Their dedication and service remind us that even as one chapter closes, another unfolds, bringing new opportunities and hope.
Patricia O’Callaghan’s commitment to the Carmelitana Collection stands as a testament to her remarkable dedication. For more than 30 years, she generously shared her energy and expertise in nurturing and managing this treasured resource, making it accessible and meaningful to countless individuals seeking a deeper understanding of Carmelite spirituality.
With heartfelt words, Quinn Conners reflected on the origins of Patricia’s journey with us, recalling how Patrick McMahon’s vision recognized her as the ideal steward for the collection. Patricia’s professional excellence, combined with her warm and helpful personality, Quinn added, left a lasting impression on everyone who encountered her while exploring the Carmelite tradition.
Craig Morrison also expressed heartfelt gratitude, emphasizing Patricia’s invaluable role in “preserving the patrimony of the Order.” Through her dedicated service, he recognized, Patricia has ensured that the rich heritage of the Carmelite spirituality will continue to inspire and guide future generations.
In a diWerent yet equally meaningful way, Sister Margaret “Peggy” Crowley, SHCJ, has played a vital role in supporting and strengthening the province’s formation program over the past five years. Her commitment and involvement have been instrumental in guiding our brothers through their spiritual growth and community development.
Mike Joyce took the opportunity to acknowledge Sister Peggy’s generous work with the brothers, including himself. He highlighted how her eWorts have kept the student community grounded, while also lending them a compassionate and attentive ear. Her presence and dedication have been a source of stability and encouragement for all involved in the formation process.
As the evening drew to a close, the Whitefriars Hall community expressed its deep gratitude to both honorees. In recognition of their dedication and service, each was presented with a print of Emanuel “Manu” Franco’s work. The gift carried special meaning, as Manu himself had come to know both of them during his own formation journey, making the gift a fitting tribute to their lasting impact.
While we acknowledge the close of an important chapter in the lives of these two remarkable members of our community, we also look ahead with hope and excitement for what lies before them. Their time with us has been a true blessing! Though their presence will be greatly missed, we remain grateful for all they have given and confident that their influence will continue to be felt—both here at Whitefriars Hall and wherever their next steps may lead.
The Carmelites of the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, in allegiance to Jesus Christ, live in a prophetic and contemplative stance of prayer, common life, and service. Inspired by Elijah and Mary and informed by the Carmelite Rule, we give witness to an eight-hundred-year-old tradition of spiritual transformation in the United States, Canada, Peru, Mexico, and El Salvador, and Honduras.
