A Lay Carmelite is a man or woman
called to live Carmelite spirituality

Unlike friars or cloistered nuns,
Lay Carmelites do not leave behind
their homes, families, careers, or daily responsibilities.

Instead, they are called to seek God
right where they are,
bringing the Carmelite way of prayer
into the heart of everyday life.

From the origins of Carmel on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land,
the Carmelite tradition has carried
a simple but profound calling
to live in allegiance to Jesus Christ
through prayer, community, and service.

To be a Lay Carmelite means
to embrace that same spirit
as a lay person in the world.

It means learning to listen for God
in silence and prayer.

It means living with a contemplative heart,
even in the midst of work, family life,
and the many demands of each day.

Lay Carmelites gather in community
for formation, prayer, and support.

They are nourished by Scripture,
the Eucharist,
the teachings of the Carmelite saints,
and a deep devotion to Mary,
Our Mother and Sister in Carmel.

Different people, different lives,
different responsibilities,
