CARMELITE GAVIN QUINN DIES
(July 16, 2024; Darien, IL) The Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary (PCM), Order of Carmelites, mourns the death of the Reverend Gavin Quinn, O.Carm., who died at the age of 85 on July 16, 2024, in Naperville, Illinois.
Visitation for Reverend Gavin Quinn, O.Carm., will be held at The National Shrine of St. Thérèse, 8501 Bailey Road, Darien, IL 60561, on Friday, July 19, 2024, at 4:30PM CDT, with funeral to follow at 7:00PM CDT. Interment will take place the following day, Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 2755 West 111th Street, Chicago, IL 60655.
Gavin was born to (the late) John Joseph Quinn and (the late) Mary Rita (Conway) Quinn on January 8, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois. His given name at baptism was Hugh Patrick. He is survived by his brother, James Anthony Quinn, and sister, Kathleen A. Quinn.
Hugh attended Carmelite Junior Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ontario, from 1952 to 1954, and the Carmelite Junior Seminary in Hamilton Massachusetts, from 1954 to 1956. He attended Mount Carmel College in Niagara Falls, Ontario, from 1956 to 1958 and professed simple vows with the Carmelites on August 18, 1958, taking the religious name of Gavin. In 1961, Gavin received a B.A. in Philosophy from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York. He then studied theology at Whitefriars Hall before returning to St. Bonaventure University and receiving his M.A. in History in 1967. He professed his solemn vows with the Carmelites on February 8, 1962, and was ordained to the priesthood on March 6, 1965.
Father’s first assignment was at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, Illinois, from 1966 to 1976, as both a teacher and as local vocation coordinator. He then served as faculty at DeSales High School in Louisville, Kentucky, from 1976 to 1978, returning to Mount Carmel High School in 1978 to again serve as faculty, from 1978 to 1986. Father went on to serve as Associate Pastor at St. Matthew Parish in Glendale Heights, Illinois, from 1986 to 1990 and from 2006 to 2008. From 1990 to 2006 he served as Pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Darien, Illinois.
Retiring in 2008, but remaining semi-active, Father served from 2008 to 2013 as part time chaplain for Carmelite Carefree Village and as Pastor Emeritus for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, both located in Darien, Illinois, and continued as assistant at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish until 2016.
In 2016, after a brief rehab at Marian Joy Rehab following hip surgery, Father retired to St. Simon Stock Community in Darien, Illinois. In May of 2024, Father moved to St. Patrick Residence and Rehabilitation Center in Naperville, Illinois, where he remained until his death.
