Carmelite Priest Warren Carmlin Dies.

(November 16, 2022; Darien, IL) The Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary (PCM), Order of Carmelites, mourns the death of the Reverend Warren Carlin, O. Carm., who died at the age of 90 on November 15, 2022.

Visitation for the Reverend Warren Carlin, O. Carm., will be held at The National Shrine of St. Thérèse, 8501 Bailey Road, Darien, IL 60561, from 5-7pm on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, with funeral liturgy to follow. Burial will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 2755 W 111th St., Chicago, IL 60655, at 10am on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

Warren was born to (the late) Robert Edward Carlin and (the late) Lillian Louise (White) Carlin on August 28, 1932, in Buffalo, New York. His given name at baptism was Robert Edward. He is survived by his sister Susan Lydon.

Robert Edward began school at La Universidad Intercontinental in Santa Ursula Xitle, in Tlalpan, Mexico, and then at St. John the Baptist School in Kenmore, New York. He then attended the Carmelite Junior Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ontario, entering the Carmelite novitiate afterwards. He professed simple vows on September 1, 1951, taking the religious name of Warren. He then studied at Mount Carmel College in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He professed solemn vows with the Carmelites on September 15, 1954. He studied theology at Whitefriars Hall in Washington, DC, and was ordained a Carmelite priest on May 26, 1958. He also studied at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France; at Laval University in Quebec, earning a master’s degree in French; and at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, earning a doctoral degree in French.

Father Warren’s first assignment was in 1959 as teacher at Joliet Catholic High School in Joliet, Illinois, for 10 years. From 1969 to 1972 he studied for his doctorate in French at Northwestern University. From 1973 to 1978 he taught at Lake Forest College in Highland Park, Illinois. In 1978 he started teaching at the College of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois, and continued teaching and became campus minister there until mid-2000, when he retired.
