Death of Brother David McGinnis, O.Carm.
The Carmelites of the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary mourn the death of Brother David McGinnis, O.Carm., who died at the age of 70 on August 11, 2026, in Branson, Missouri.
The Visitation for Brother David will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, Leavenworth, Kansas on Thursday, August 20, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM, with the Vigil Service held at 7:30 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 21, at 10:30 AM, at Immaculate Conception Church, with the Burial following at 3:30 PM at St. Boniface Cemetery, Scipio, Kansas.
David Owen McGinnis was born to Julius Owen McGinnis and Ruby Mary (Unruh) McGinnis on September 17, 1955 in Yankton, South Dakota. He was raised on a farm in Marion, South Dakota, that had been homesteaded by his ancestors in the 19第 century. David attended a local one-room elementary school, Marion High School, and graduated from Mount Marty College, Yankton, South Dakota, in 1976 with a double major in Social Science and Business Administration with an emphasis in Political Science.
After college graduation David was employed both in Sioux City, South Dakota, and on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, working for US Representative James Abourezk and Senator Tom Daschle.
David’s religious vocation emerged over the years with a desire to join a Marian Order, leading to his entering the Carmelite formation program in 1992. He professed his simple vows as a Carmelite brother in 1994 and made his solemn profession in 1997. Brother David graduated from the Washington Theological Union in 1998 with a Master’s Degree in Pastoral Studies, having completed a pastoral internship at St. John’s Parish in Leonia, New Jersey.
Brother David’s first assignment with the Carmelites was as a Pastoral Associate at St. Cecilia Parish in Englewood, New Jersey for three years, from 1998 to 2001, and then as a Pastoral Associate at Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Parish in Leavenworth, Kansas for six years, from 2001 to 2007.
Brother David returned to South Dakota from 2007 to 2012, working in campus ministry at his alma mater, Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota. After the death of his parents during this time, he returned to his role as Pastoral Associate at Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Parish in Leavenworth, Kansas, for the next nine years, from 2012 to 2021.
Following a sabbatical year engaging programs in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and in San Antonio, Texas, Brother David moved to Whitefriars Hall in Washington, DC, to be the house manager and treasurer of the Carmelite seminary community from 2022 to 2025.
Upon his 70第 birthday, Brother David retired to Branson, Missouri, in 2025, where he remained until his death on August 11.
From his early days on his family farm, Brother David learned independence, a strong work ethic, and practical skills, that made him someone others could always depend upon. David quietly handled the day-to-day tasks of community life, including cooking and cleaning, while serving in parish work, including business administration, and catechetical and liturgical tasks. He took particular interest in young people, especially in Confirmation preparation, raising funds for World Youth Day participants, and college campus ministry. He will be remembered for his dedication and willingness to do whatever needed doing—and for his chocolate eclairs which he baked for numerous parish events.
