Ask a high school senior about the future and chances are they\u2019ve heard these questions before.<\/p>

Where are you going after graduation? What are you going to do?<\/em><\/p>

Good questions, but there\u2019s another one that takes a little longer to answer\u2026<\/p>

Who am I becoming?<\/em><\/p>

And maybe one that takes a little contemplative quiet to even hear\u2026<\/p>

God, where are You in all of this?<\/em><\/p>

Kairos gives young people a few days away from school to sit with those questions.<\/p>

The name Kairos<\/em> comes from a Greek word, \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2 | an opportune moment\u2026 the right time\u2026 or, more specifically, the exact or critical time.<\/em> \u00a0Some who make the retreat refer to it as \u201cGod\u2019s time<\/em>.\u201d There\u2019s time to think about who they are, about the people they love, and about the relationship they have with God in the middle of the life they\u2019re already living.<\/p>

The story of Kairos begins with people sharing something they had found worthwhile. Back in the 1940s, on the Spanish island of Mallorca, a group of lay Catholics and priests wished to reach people who felt distant from the Church. One of them was a layman named Eduardo Bonn\u00edn. The movement they helped begin became known as Cursillo de Cristiandad<\/em>\u2026 a short course in Christianity. Its first officially recognized Cursillo took place at the monastery of San Honorato in January 1949. By 1957, people were making Cursillo in Waco, Texas, where the first U.S. weekend was held in Spanish. In 1965, Fr. Douglas Brown and a team of priests, religious brothers and laypeople in the Diocese of Brooklyn adapted that experience for young people. In those early years, the retreat went by names like Christian Awakening<\/em> and Encounter<\/em>. It reached St. Xavier High School in Louisville in 1970 and Joliet Catholic High School in Illinois in 1975.<\/p>

That\u2019s how it grew\u2026 one school helping another offer its students something its own students had experienced. And right here in Joliet, the Carmelites were\u2026 are\u2026 part of that story.<\/p>

During one of these \u201cshort courses in Christianity<\/em>\u201d participants might have spent part of those three days sitting around a table, listening to someone talk about are\u2026 are trying to\u2026 live their faith at home and at work. Then they\u2019d have a chance to talk about their own life. They\u2019d pray together, go to Mass, and spend time with what they\u2019d heard shared. Cursillo calls that way of living piety, study and action<\/em>. One makes time for God\u2026 keeps learning about their faith\u2026 and then does something with it\u2026 maybe for the person who\u2019ll be sitting across from them at work on Monday morning.<\/p>

Students who have made Kairos come back to lead it alongside teachers and campus ministers. They give witness talks<\/em>\u2026 they tell something of their own lives and where faith has found a place in them.<\/p>

While students are at Kairos, they listen\u2026 quite possibly to the kid who has sat two seats over from them since freshman year.<\/p>

Participants talk in small groups and then take time to sit quietly with what was shared. They eat together, pray together, celebrate Mass together, and have an opportunity for reconciliation and spiritual conversation.<\/p>

Participants may know what their classmates do after school. They may know who their friends are. But have they ever heard them talk about who taught them to pray?<\/em><\/p>

Maybe, while sitting in chapel, they find themself bringing a classmate to God in prayer\u2026 and there is something very Carmelite about that\u2026 someone trusted them with a little of their life, they listened, and now that person\u2019s name is part of their prayer.<\/em><\/p>

And then they go home\u2026 \u201cliving<\/em> the fourth<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>

That expression, living the fourth<\/em>, is another gift from Cursillo.<\/p>

Kairos lasts three days. The \u201cfourth day<\/em>\u201d is the life they live after<\/em> Kairos.<\/p>

For a student coming home from Kairos, living the fourth<\/em> is sitting at the dinner table when someone begins talking about their day.<\/p>

Previously, they\u2019d say, \u201cHow was it?\u201d and keep right on eating.<\/p>

But now\u2026 Living the Fourth<\/em>\u2026 they put down their fork and ask\u2026<\/p>

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/em><\/p>

And then they listen.<\/em><\/p>

They give freely\u2026 completely\u2026 willingly\u2026 and eagerly\u2026 of their time.<\/p>

Because their time is God\u2019s time<\/em>\u2026<\/p>

Because they are\u2026 living the fourth<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
