The choice is yours. You could spend those weeks with anyone you wished, with plenty of time to talk, listen and share in their daily life.

There is just one condition: the purpose of your journey is to deepen your experience of Carmelite spirituality so that, when you return, you can better serve others.

Where would you go? Whom would you spend time with? What would you do together… and what would you hope to bring home?

What interests me most is how the experience might change the way someone lives their faith through active ministry.

My first thought was to go back to the earliest Carmelites on Mount Carmel. I would want to share their everyday lives: praying, working, preparing meals and taking care of the community. But as I considered what I most wanted to learn, my attention shifted toward the time following that period, when Carmelites were establishing themselves in Europe and developing their life as truly mendicant friars.

That distinction matters. The original community on Mount Carmel lived as hermits. The move toward a more public ministry unfolded gradually as Carmelites settled in Europe during the thirteenth century. There, they faced the challenge of living their contemplative calling among people whose circumstances and needs were different from those they had known.

That is the experience I would like to step into.

I would want to spend those four weeks alongside friars learning how to bring their life of prayer into their encounters with others. How did they respond to unfamiliar needs? What did they struggle with? What happened when the demands of the day disrupted their plans?

And when they returned to prayer, how had the people they met changed what they brought before God?

Their move into mendicant life involved a real dependence on others. The friars offered their service while relying on the generosity of the people around them. They had to receive hospitality as well as offer care. This meant active service became a way of living their contemplative vocation in new circumstances, alongside prayer and community life.

There is something deeply human about that relationship. We may begin ministry thinking about what we have to give. Being willing to receive, to learn, to accept help… and to admit that someone else understands something we do not… and that asks something more of us.

That is part of what draws me to this moment in Carmelite history. I would want to see how those relationships shaped the friars themselves.

It also brings the question much closer to our own lives.

This is where the expressions “contemplative service” and “contemplative community” come into play alongside contemplative prayer. Together, they describe a life in which prayer, relationships and service help us become more open to God. Each belongs to the same vocation.

What might that look like on an ordinary Tuesday?

Consider someone volunteering at a food pantry. At first, they might pray for people experiencing hunger. As they get to know the people who come through the door, that prayer begins to carry names and faces: a parent trying to stretch a paycheck, an older person living alone, someone embarrassed to ask for help.

Those encounters can change the volunteer’s prayer. They can also change the way the volunteer serves.

Perhaps they begin to notice that the intake process feels uncomfortable. Perhaps they learn that the opening hours are difficult for working families. Perhaps they realize that someone needs a few minutes of conversation as much as a bag of groceries.

The practical work still matters. People need food. But paying attention to the person receiving it can change how that work is done.

In that exchange, prayer and service keep deepening one another. We bring people’s lives into prayer, and we return to those people with a little more understanding, patience or willingness to listen.

The Carmelite Constitutions describe contemplation as a transforming experience of God’s love. That transformation reaches into our relationships and our response to others. It remains God’s gift, something we receive rather than something we produce by keeping ourselves busy.

For me, that raises some very practical questions. Am I listening closely enough to understand what this person needs? Am I willing to let the encounter challenge my assumptions? Can I offer help while respecting the other person’s experience, choices and dignity?

Those questions belong in a classroom, a parish office, a retreat center and a hospital room. They belong at the kitchen table when someone is caring for a relative or listening to a family member who is having a difficult day.

Carmelite service takes many forms. The Order is not limited to a single ministry. Different gifts and different circumstances draw out different responses. What binds the ministries is the spiritual life that shapes them.

Of course, this way of serving needs nourishment. Dedicated time for prayer, Scripture, worship, silence and community remains essential. It is good to be cautious against allowing any one aspect of Carmelite life to overwhelm the others. Prayer, community and service belong together, even when holding them together requires additional effort.

That effort is something I would want to understand during my imaginary four weeks. I would want to share the ordinary days: the work, the conversations, the interruptions and the moments when someone needed more patience than a tired friar felt he had left.

I would hope to come home more attentive to the people in front of me, more willing to learn from them, and more aware of how God might be working through those encounters.

That is, to me, what makes the question worth asking. The destination tells us something about what draws us to Carmel. What we hope to bring back tells us something about the people we want to serve… and the person we are through the ways we still hope to grow.

So, where would you go for those four weeks?

And how might someone else’s life be better because you had been there?

    <div
