As I turned a page, a thin holy card fell out from the book (pictured above) that celebrated the second centenary of the canonization of John of the Cross and his nomination as Doctor of the Church (1926). The Carmelite Center is pleased to host a seminar on this Carmelite Mystic on September 22. Beginning at 4pm, Jodi Bilinkoff (Professor of History, Emerita, University of North Carolina at Greensboro) will offer a lecture titled \u201cFrom Disgraced Friar to Doctor of the Church.\u201d She will be followed by Alison Weber (Professor of Spanish, Emerita, University of Virginia) who will speak on \u201cJohn of the Cross and Anne of Jesus: An Apostolic Friendship\u201d and Christopher Wilson (Visiting Associate Professor in Art History, George Washington University) who will speak on \u201cA Visual Identity for St. John of the Cross: Gij\u00f3n, Villalpando, and the Formation of Carmelite Iconography.\u201d The seminar will be recorded and made available on the Center\u2019s website shortly after the seminar.<\/p><p>On September 30<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and October 7<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0 at the St. Vincent de Paul Chapel on CUA\u2019s campus, the Carmelite Centre will sponsor two moments of catechesis on the Carmelite brown scapular followed by the enrollment in the brown scapular on October 15<sup>th<\/sup>. The catechesis will be led by Br. John-Mary of Jesus Crucified, O.C.D. and each person registered for this catechesis and enrollment will receive the recently published\u00a0book,\u00a0<i>Flos Carmeli: A Guide to the Marion Consecration through the Brown Scapular<\/i>\u00a0by John-Mary Winter O.C.D. and Michael-Joseph Paris O.C.D.\u00a0 This volume is available from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/us.list-manage.com\/LMq_WyjhWyZ?e%3D76a95d6352%26c2id%3Dc5560b88fdca2f27b2e5ba8a9e3b92c5&amp;source=gmail-imap&amp;ust=1789051026000000&amp;usg=AOvVaw37748Suw4yF6A1j_BNyT0R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q%3Dhttps:\/\/us.list-manage.com\/LMq_WyjhWyZ?e%253D76a95d6352%2526c2id%253Dc5560b88fdca2f27b2e5ba8a9e3b92c5%26source%3Dgmail-imap%26ust%3D1789051026000000%26usg%3DAOvVaw37748Suw4yF6A1j_BNyT0R&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1788964498483000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2rGbgHPbIgn07E5OuSved7\"><u>ICS Publications<\/u><\/a>.<\/p><p>On October 1<sup>st<\/sup>, on the feast Of Saint Th\u00e9r\u00e8se of Lisieux, the Carmelite Center will hold a prayer service in the student center at Catholic University. This center is at the crossroads of the campus\u2014a perfect location to meet undergraduate students rushing by and introduce them to Saint Th\u00e9r\u00e8se. Some of these young people want to tell us about the importance of Th\u00e9r\u00e8se in their lives. Last year we ran out of roses (we had 300) so this year we have ordered 500 roses to celebrate The Little Flower.<\/p><p>Over the summer I had the opportunity to meet with the President of the Teresianum in Rome, Emilio Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ednez Gonz\u00e1lez.\u00a0 We discussed possible collaborations between the Carmelite Center and their very impressive program in Carmelite studies. In early August at the invitation of Fr. Emanuel Frano Gomez, O.Carm. I spoke to over 350 catechists from the diocese of Tucson.\u00a0 Fr. Manu, as he is known, is director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries for the diocese and he designed the art in the Spanish Missal for the United States. Also over the summer we began overhauling the Center\u2019s website and the new site should be launched in the coming months.\u00a0<\/p><p>Among the highlights of my summer was a retreat I gave at our Spiritual Center in Niagara Falls, titled,\u00a0<i>Paintings and Passages, Sacred Texts and Sacred Art<\/i>.\u00a0 The last painting that we meditated on was by Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo. This masterpiece (see below) is a portrait of Mary Magdalene (1535-1540) looking out at us. In the lower left is Jesus\u2019s tomb and the vase of oil she brought to anoint his body. A bit of her crimson garment, the traditional color for Mary Magdalene, can be seen on the lower right and just at the end of her sleeve. But she has wrapped herself in the shroud that Jesus left behind at his resurrection.
