data-start=\"149\" data-end=\"231\"><strong>For more than 800 years, the Carmelite friars have lived as a mendicant order.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"233\" data-end=\"257\"><strong>But what does that mean?<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"259\" data-end=\"319\">The word mendicant comes from a Latin word meaning <em>to beg<\/em>.<\/p><p data-start=\"321\" data-end=\"556\">In practice, this means that unlike monks who live primarily within a monastery,<br data-start=\"401\" data-end=\"404\" \/>mendicant friars live among the people,<br data-start=\"443\" data-end=\"446\" \/>serving the needs of the community in many different ways<br data-start=\"503\" data-end=\"506\" \/>and relying on the generosity of those they serve.<\/p><p data-start=\"558\" data-end=\"720\">From their origins on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land,<br data-start=\"610\" data-end=\"613\" \/>Carmelites carried a simple but powerful calling<br data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"664\" \/>to live lives rooted in prayer, community, and ministry.<\/p><p data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"889\">Being mendicant means the friars are sent outward<br data-start=\"771\" data-end=\"774\" \/>into parishes, schools, retreat centers, hospitals, universities,<br data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"842\" \/>neighborhoods, and communities of every kind.<\/p><p data-start=\"891\" data-end=\"1027\">It means walking with people in their everyday lives,<br data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"947\" \/>bringing the Carmelite tradition of contemplation<br data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"999\" \/>into the heart of the world.<\/p><p data-start=\"1029\" data-end=\"1109\">Because of this, many and varied are the ways the Carmelite friar ministers.<\/p><p data-start=\"1111\" data-end=\"1307\">Some preach and teach.<br data-start=\"1133\" data-end=\"1136\" \/>Some accompany people in spiritual direction.<br data-start=\"1181\" data-end=\"1184\" \/>Some work in missions, social outreach, or pastoral ministry.<br data-start=\"1245\" data-end=\"1248\" \/>Others guide people through retreats and moments of prayer.<\/p><p data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1482\">Different ministries, different places,<br data-start=\"1348\" data-end=\"1351\" \/>but one shared calling<br data-start=\"1373\" data-end=\"1376\" \/>to live the Carmelite Journey of faith<br data-start=\"1414\" data-end=\"1417\" \/>and to help others encounter God<br data-start=\"1449\" data-end=\"1452\" \/>in the midst of ordinary life.<\/p><p data-start=\"1484\" data-end=\"1524\">That is the spirit of a Carmelite friar.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5536a0d elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\"
