For the Carmelites, Priestly ordination is a sacramental, Apostolic ministry that continues the mission of “living in allegiance to Jesus Christ”.

Sacramental Act: Ordination is seen as a gift that places the new priest into the care of Jesus and Mary, enabling him to celebrate the Eucharist and the sacrament of reconciliation for the sanctification of the people.

Carmelite Charism: The ordination of a Carmelite friar is deeply connected to a life of contemplation and prayer, in addition to apostolic work.

Missionary Zeal: Priestly ministry is viewed as a way to serve the Church, sometimes specifically focused on missionary work, the “care of souls,” and bringing the Gospel to the world.

Rituals and Tradition: The ceremony involves traditional elements such as the laying on of hands by a bishop and the prayer of consecration.

Service and Mercy: The role is defined by acting as an instrument of God’s mercy and a minister of service.

For Carmelites, this vocation is a response to Christ’s mercy and a commitment to serve the Church.
