Leopold Glueckert, O.Carm.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4063582 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4063582\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A devout Polish artist showed his love and gratitude to Mary for answering his prayer to survive.\u00a0<\/p><p>Before World War II, Adam Kossowski (1905-1986) had been a promising artist in Poland, with a keen eye for depicting feeling and emotion in a variety of mediums.\u00a0 His studies and travel had enabled him to learn a wide range of artistic methods.\u00a0 His foundation as an artist began in Warsaw and Cracow, but he enriched his abilities by travel to Rome, Florence, Naples and Sicily.<\/p><p>His ordinary life changed dramatically in September 1939 when Hitler\u2019s armed forces invaded Poland.\u00a0 Adam\u2019s military unit was pushed eastward into the zone occupied by the Soviet army.\u00a0 With thousands of his fellow soldiers, he was disarmed in November and sent to a Soviet labor camp in Siberia.\u00a0 The harsh weather and brutal working conditions nearly drove him to despair.\u00a0 But it was during this imprisonment that he began to pray.\u00a0 He resolved to use his artistic talents to promote devotion to a merciful God, and to spread the virtues of Mary and the saints.<\/p><p>The answer to his prayer began in 1943, when the British government persuaded Stalin to release the captive Poles to allow them to fight on another front.\u00a0 Adam and thousands of his fellow captives made their way to Britain to continue the war effort.\u00a0 He contributed his talent to the Polish Information ministry in London.\u00a0 When the war ended, he stayed in Britain and hoped to find ways to express his talent.<\/p><p>It was at just this time that the Carmelites in Britain had reacquired their ancient priory at Aylesford in Kent.\u00a0 Aylesford was one of the oldest foundations in Europe, dating from 1242.\u00a0 It was the home of Simon Stock, and the site of a pivotal meeting which helped the Carmelites to adjust to urban ministry as one of the great Mendicant orders.\u00a0 And it was also the traditional place where Mary gave Simon the Brown Scapular as a pledge of her love and protection.<\/p><p>The heart and soul of this recovery of a historic priory was Carmelite Fr. Malachy Lynch.\u00a0 Malachy hoped to restore the ancient ruin and turn it into a spiritual hub and pilgrimage site for Lay Carmelites and modern spiritual seekers.\u00a0 In 1950, he gave Kossowski his first commission to paint seven panels which traced the history of Aylesford.\u00a0 The result was so successful that Fr. Malachy began granting one commission after another as the restoration proceeded.\u00a0 By 1972, Adam had contributed nearly 100 works of art, including oil paints, tempera, stained glass, ceramics and sgraffito murals.\u00a0 The entire Aylesford campus was gradually enriched with Adam\u2019s holy imagery.\u00a0<\/p><p>The next challenge was a ceramic Rosary Way, depicting each of the 15 mysteries of the rosary.\u00a0 At first, Adam expressed his doubt that he could take on such an awesome task.\u00a0 But Fr. Malachy assured him that Our Lady had sent him as just the right person to complete the work.\u00a0 So, Adam went ahead and the result was brilliant.\u00a0 The pain and suffering depicted in the various stations flowed from Adam\u2019s own experience in the labor camp.\u00a0 What began as a simple task gradually evolved into a labor of love and gratitude to Mary.<\/p><p>Perhaps the capstone of Kossowski\u2019s work was the imposing ceramic depiction of the vision of Simon Stock and the Scapular.\u00a0 This ambitious work required the use of a very large kiln at the Old Fulham Pottery, dating from 1672.\u00a0 It was necessary to prepare each element carefully, since it could only be fired once at 1200 degrees.\u00a0 This kiln is the only surviving one of its type.\u00a0<\/p><p>The central scene of the Scapular ceramic shows Mary holding the child Jesus, with Simon Stock knelling before her wearing his brown Carmelite habit with the white cloak.\u00a0 Simon lifts the scapular, as Mary touches it and returns it to him as a sign of protection and dedication for the Carmelites.\u00a0 The central scene is surrounded by celebrating angels.\u00a0 Carmelite spirituality interprets this sign of Mary\u2019s protection as a mark of identity to live as she did, and so receive God\u2019s eternal salvation.<\/p><p>Kossowski\u2019s original ceramic \u201cgiant\u201d stands at the end of the Rosary Way.\u00a0 The imposing 13 foot artwork marks the importance of the Carmelite relationship with Mary as their sister and protector.\u00a0 As the Aylesford priory developed into a pilgrimage center, the Scapular Ceramic was a valuable teaching vehicle to explain what the scapular is and is not.\u00a0 We commit ourselves to live as Mary did, and she promises that we will have the grace to save us from harm.\u00a0<\/p><p>The popularity of the work did not remain a secret for long.\u00a0 Within a few years, Adam Kossowski came to the United States himself.\u00a0 Since the new Spiritual Center in Darien had adopted the name \u201cAylesford\u201d there was a practical reason to strengthen that link.\u00a0 Adam supervised<\/p><p>several castings of the work which he detailed with his own hand.\u00a0 The first casting was installed in Darien.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Others were sent to Mount Carmel High School in Houston, and Joliet Catholic High School.\u00a0<\/p><p>Kossowski\u2019s skill as an artist blended with his personal spirituality, forged in suffering and redemption.\u00a0 His tribute to Mary for her protection is a touching prayer in ceramic beauty.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cedede0 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"cedede0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b02ee54 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b02ee54\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"Body\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.0pt;\">With the Provincial &#8220;White House&#8221; at Castle Eden in Darien scheduled for demolition, we have used photography and 3D scanning to document an important piece of the Province\u2019s heritage: Adam Kossowski\u2019s depiction of Mary, the Child Jesus and St. Simon Stock. Personally supervised and detailed by the artist, the Darien casting links the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary to his original work at Aylesford Priory in England.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18.0pt;\">The accompanying photographs (below) and video (above) of the 3D rendering are just a small piece of the overall collection of photographic and 3D assets created to share the installation\u2019s detail and sculptural depth, preserving a visual record for future generations to study and appreciate. This digital preservation effort honors both the artwork\u2019s place in our Province\u2019s history and the Carmelite devotion to Mary it expresses, honoring the artist, his faith and the story behind this treasured work.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-element
