The Carmelite Family…<\/strong><\/h1>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It\u2019s easy to forget just how expansive the Carmelite family actually is.<\/p>

Looking only at the O.Carm. Carmelites, the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance, there are 20 provinces around the world, approximately 2,000 friars, brothers, and priests, another 800 or so Carmelite nuns, more than 2,000 Carmelite sisters, and over 9,000 Lay Carmelites. That puts the total Carmelite family of the Ancient Observance at well over 14,000 people!<\/em><\/p>

And then, of course, there is the entire Discalced Carmelite family in addition to that!<\/em><\/p>

While the Carmelites are by no means the largest of the religious orders, they are remarkably widespread and active in an amazingly diverse set of ministries!<\/p>

Carmelites serve in what might be a surprising variety of ministries around the world. They are involved not only in parish ministry and evangelization, but also in schools and education, higher education and scholarship, retreat and spirituality centers, shrines and pilgrimage ministry, Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation, and the work of the Carmelite NGO. They serve the poor and marginalized, work in prison ministry, provide hospital and healthcare chaplaincy, care for the sick, and offer spiritual accompaniment.<\/p>

Their ministries also include youth and young adult ministry, spiritual direction and formation, Lay Carmelite formation, media, publishing and communications, libraries, archives and museums, the preservation of Carmelite heritage, as well as missionary work and service to developing Churches around the world.<\/p>

The O.Carm. Carmelites combine a deeply contemplative spirituality with an extraordinarily broad and active ministry. And there is a lovely bit of Carmelite DNA running underneath all of those very different activities:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It is not the particular ministry that defines the Carmelite.
Rather, it is the Carmelite character that defines and shapes
the way that ministry is carried out.<\/strong><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

So, What does a Carmelite… DO?<\/strong><\/p>

Ask someone what a Carmelite does and the answer may depend entirely on how that person first encountered Carmel. For some, Carmelites are contemplatives. They picture silence, prayer, monasteries, brown habits and an interior life centered on God. Others know Carmel through its saints: St. Th\u00e9r\u00e8se of Lisieux, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Titus Brandsma or St. Edith Stein. To them, Carmel may seem primarily a school of spirituality, known for prayer, mysticism and the search for God within the ordinary circumstances of life. Someone else may know the Carmelites because a Carmelite priest celebrated Mass at their parish, taught them in high school, directed a retreat or served their family at a shrine.<\/p>

All of those impressions contain something true.<\/p>

None of them, however, tells the whole story.<\/p>

Around the world, Carmelites of the Ancient Observance, O.Carm., can be found serving in an extraordinary variety of ministries. They are pastors and teachers, missionaries and retreat directors, chaplains and scholars. They work with young people, prisoners, migrants and the poor. They operate schools, shrines, spirituality centers and houses of formation. They serve in communications, publishing, justice and peace ministries, healthcare settings and universities.<\/p>

The interesting question, then, may not be simply, \u201cWhat does a Carmelite do?\u201d<\/p>

Perhaps it is better to ask, \u201cWhat makes what a Carmelite does… Carmelite?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

Religious Orders are sometimes identified almost entirely with a particular apostolate. (I learned that word many years working with the Provincial Archivist. I don’t have much occasion to use it but this seemed a good time to pop it out and dust it off – so I hope I am using it correctly!) <\/em>Some were founded specifically to teach. Others were established to care for the sick, preach missions or serve people living in poverty.<\/p>

Carmel developed differently.<\/p>

The earliest Carmelites gathered on Mount Carmel near the beginning of the 13th century. Their first concern was not the establishment of a particular institution or ministry. They sought a life centered upon God, lived in prayer, community, simplicity and attentive listening to the Word of God.<\/p>

The Rule of St. Albert gave structure to that way of life.<\/p>

As circumstances eventually carried the Carmelites from Mount Carmel into Europe and later throughout the world, their forms of ministry expanded dramatically. The contemplative heart of Carmel remained, but the places in which Carmelites lived that spirituality multiplied.<\/p>

That distinction remains important today.<\/p>

A Carmelite may be a parish priest, but parish work by itself does not define Carmel. A Carmelite may be a teacher, but education alone does not define Carmel. A Carmelite may work among the poor, direct retreats, administer a shrine, serve as a chaplain or conduct academic research. The ministry changes but the Carmelite vocation underneath it does not.<\/p>

For many Catholics, their first encounter with an O.Carm. friar happens in a parish. Across the world, Carmelites pastor local churches, celebrate the sacraments, preach, provide pastoral care and accompany families through the ordinary rhythm of Christian life. It is easy, therefore, to think of them simply as parish priests. But the Carmelite identity is meant to bring something particular to parish ministry: a sensitivity to prayer, community, contemplation and the presence of God within everyday life. The parish is not merely a place where the Carmelite performs religious duties. Ideally, it becomes another place in which the Carmelite tradition of attentiveness to God is shared.<\/p>

Then there are Carmelites whose daily world looks remarkably different.<\/p>

They teach. Across the international Order, Carmelites serve in elementary and secondary schools, colleges, universities and theological institutions. Some teach theology or Scripture. Others have taught subjects far removed from what one might immediately associate with a friar. A young person may therefore encounter Carmel not first through a monastery or retreat but through a teacher standing in front of a classroom. Education has become a particularly significant Carmelite ministry in several parts of the world. Schools provide opportunities not simply for academic formation but for cultivating community, responsibility, service and an awareness of the dignity of others. The Carmelite classroom can become another version of the cell described in the ancient Rule: a place where attention matters.<\/p>

At the opposite end of the apparent spectrum is perhaps the ministry people most naturally associate with Carmel.<\/p>

Retreat houses, hermitages and spirituality centers remain deeply characteristic expressions of Carmelite life. Here, people encounter Carmel through silence, spiritual direction, prayer, Scripture, retreats and opportunities to step temporarily away from the noise of ordinary life. This seems immediately recognizable as Carmelite. Yet the remarkable thing is that the friar offering spiritual direction at a retreat center and the friar teaching teenagers at a busy school are drawing from the same spiritual tradition.<\/p>

One ministry is obviously quiet.<\/p>

The other may contain lockers, bells, basketball games and several hundred adolescents.<\/p>

Carmel somehow has room for both.<\/p>

Travel farther through the international Carmelite family and the picture broadens again.<\/p>

Carmelites minister among people living in poverty. They serve prisoners. They work in developing communities, accompany migrants and participate in projects involving human rights, education, peace and care for creation. The international Carmelite family even maintains a presence at the United Nations through the Carmelite NGO. These ministries might initially appear quite distant from the contemplative origins of Carmel. In reality, there is a strong connection. Contemplation, properly understood, is not an escape from the world. It is learning to see more clearly. And once someone truly begins to look at the world attentively, suffering becomes difficult to ignore.<\/p>

The Carmelite tradition of contemplation therefore carries within it a prophetic dimension. Elijah, one of the great spiritual figures of Carmel, encountered God in profound silence, but he also confronted injustice. Carmelite spirituality holds those realities together by truly living The Carmelite Way:<\/p>

Silence and action.<\/p>

Prayer and justice.<\/p>

Contemplation and service.<\/p>

Some of the most dynamic areas of the Order today are also found far from its medieval European roots. Carmelites serve in countries across Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas, including places where communities of Carmel are relatively young and growing. Their work can include parishes, education, formation, social development and missionary outreach, often simultaneously. A friar in one of these settings may spend part of his day celebrating Mass, another part travelling to an isolated community, another working with students or families, and another forming young men who themselves hope to become Carmelites. Here again, there is no single Carmelite \u201cjob description.\u201d The ministry develops in response to the needs of the people and the local Church.<\/p>

There is another form of ministry that might surprise people, Titus Brandsma being the most recognized of this group. Carmelites have long been writers, scholars, publishers and communicators. The Carmelite tradition has produced centuries of spiritual writing, theological scholarship, poetry, correspondence and historical research. Today that work continues through books, magazines, websites, video, social media, archives and digital communications.<\/p>

A Carmelite ministry may therefore involve a pulpit.<\/p>

Or a printing press.<\/p>

Or a camera.<\/p>

Or a microphone.<\/p>

Or a laptop.<\/p>

The medium changes. The deeper task remains remarkably similar: helping people encounter something meaningful enough to make them stop, listen and look more deeply.<\/p>

And, of course, friars are only one part of the O.Carm. family.<\/p>

Contemplative Carmelite nuns live a hidden life of prayer that is itself understood as service to the Church and world.<\/p>

Congregations of Carmelite sisters undertake ministries ranging from education and healthcare to missionary service and care for the elderly.<\/p>

Thousands of Lay Carmelites live the Carmelite charism within families, professions, parishes and communities throughout the world.<\/p>

One may be a physician.<\/p>

Another a teacher.<\/p>

Another a parent raising children.<\/p>

Another may work in an office, a factory, a hospital or a university.<\/p>

Their monastery is often the landscape of ordinary life.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

And THAT may be one of the most important things to understand about Carmel in order to answer the questions of:
“What Does a Carmelite Actually Do?”
AND
\u201cWhat makes what a Carmelite does… Carmelite?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The answers are frustratingly broad.<\/p>

A Carmelite might celebrate Mass in Illinois.<\/p>

Teach students in Peru.<\/p>

Direct a retreat in Australia.<\/p>

Work with prisoners in Burkina Faso.<\/p>

Serve a parish in the Philippines.<\/p>

Study theology in Rome.<\/p>

Minister in Papua New Guinea.<\/p>

Accompany a person through spiritual direction.<\/p>

Write an article.<\/p>

Care for the sick.<\/p>

Work with young people.<\/p>

Pray quietly behind the walls of a monastery.<\/p>

Or live the Carmelite charism as a layperson while going to work and raising a family.<\/p>

These activities appear remarkably different from one another.<\/p>

Yet the tradition insists that something deeper can unite them.<\/p>

The ministry is not what makes someone Carmelite.<\/strong><\/p>

Rather, the Carmelite brings Carmel to the ministry.<\/strong><\/p>

Prayer shapes the teacher.<\/p>

Community shapes the pastor.<\/p>

Contemplation shapes the missionary.<\/p>

Silence shapes the communicator.<\/p>

The search for God shapes the work for justice.<\/p>

And an attentiveness to God’s presence shapes the ordinary encounters of everyday life.<\/p>

Perhaps that is why Carmel has been able to move across cultures and centuries without requiring every Carmelite to perform the same task.<\/p>

The external work can change because the essential work remains.<\/p>

The Carmelite continues trying to live, in the language of the Rule, in allegiance to Jesus Christ, attentive to God and attentive to the people encountered along the way.<\/p>

So when someone asks, \u201cWhat does a Carmelite do?\u201d perhaps the best answer is not a list of occupations at all…<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A Carmelite seeks God in the midst of life and helps others discover that God is already there.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

Sometimes that happens in a monastery.<\/p>

Sometimes in a classroom.<\/p>

Sometimes in a parish, prison, hospital, retreat center or mission.<\/p>

And sometimes it happens in places that do not look particularly religious at all.<\/p>

That may be precisely the point.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As just one example, here is a little bit about <\/span>The Carmelite Sisters for the Aged & Infirm<\/em><\/span> <\/strong>– A\u00a0consecrated religious in the Catholic Church and members of a Congregation founded by Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa. They dedicate their lives, service and care of those who are aged and infirm in the spirit and tradition of the Carmelite Order.<\/p>

They are women who share a vision where love makes a difference in the world. They may be diverse in age, background, culture and training but they are all united in our belief that life is precious from the moment of conception to its natural end. They have learned that life is full of memories pieced together to form God’s hand-woven tapestry. As Sisters they believe their story is tied to the story of every man and woman who are experiencing the autumn of their life. This includes their joys and sorrows, their pains and consolations, their love of family, their hopes and dream, their search for God and finding that He is always near. Their life as Carmelites is all about holding the hand of an aged person and giving meaning to their lives. It’s truly about being a mother, a sister, a daughter and a friend to someone who is another’s mother, sister, friend and loved one.<\/p>
